Online jewellery courses — what you can genuinely learn remotely
Stones on the tray, loupe in hand — the parts of gemmology that genuinely translate online, and the parts that never will.
"Online jewellery course" covers everything from real instruction to slide
decks with a price tag. Here is the honest split.

Works fully online
- Gemmology theory — stone types, treatments, imitations, trade
structures. Knowledge subjects translate to video perfectly. JDMIS runs a
dedicated online version of its gemmology foundation course: request the
GT100e syllabus. - Aesthetics and trends — history, design languages, forecasting: the
aesthetics foundation course. - Business skills — photography, merchandising, marketing for jewellery
sellers, e.g.
digital jewellery photography.
Partly online (blended)
Design and CAD have online theory components, but critique happens on your
actual work — expect blended delivery rather than pure video for
drawing
and CAD.
Genuinely needs a studio
Sawing, filing, soldering, stone setting — the
metal arts ladder
is classroom-first, video-for-revision.

Questions people actually ask
Can I study gemmology online?
The theory can — JDMIS runs a dedicated online version of its gemmology foundation course (GT100e). Practical identification is blended with hands-on sessions.
Can I learn silversmithing fully online?
No. Bench skills are proprioceptive — they live in muscle memory and need corrected practice. Schools selling fully-online bench diplomas are selling the syllabus, not the skill.
Which jewellery topics work best online?
Knowledge subjects: gemmology theory, aesthetics and trends, business skills like photography and merchandising. Design and CAD are blended — theory online, critique on your actual work.

“An institute that provides an all rounded education in jewellery.”
— Geraldine C. (Singapore) · published student feedback
“I will use the skills acquired to make pieces for family, friends and of course, myself! If I could get to a point of eventually selling pieces, even better!”
— Elena A. (Australia) · published student feedback
