Emerald — the garden gem
Emerald's internal garden is character, not defect — within limits.
Emerald is green beryl coloured by chromium and vanadium — the most
fragile member of the big-three coloured gems, and arguably the most loved.
The jardin — emeralds virtually always carry internal gardens
(inclusions). Eye-clean emeralds are rare and priced accordingly; visible
garden is normal, cracks that reach the surface are not.
Oiling — cedarwood oil filling of surface fissures is traditional,
accepted and discloseable; synthetic resins are a step further. Ask, always.
Care — no ultrasonic cleaners, no steam, gentle soap and water only.
Hardness ~7.5-8 but brittle from the gardens: protective settings for
rings, pendant/earring placements preferred.
Where it comes from — Colombia, Zambia and Brazil drive the modern
market, each with a recognisable face. Origin stories are part of the
webinar library's sessions.
